There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves. Again, they are named according to where they each exit in the spine. Each spinal nerve has two roots that attach to the spinal cord: a ventral (or anterior) root that transmits motor information and a dorsal (or posterior) root that transmits sensory information. As a result, when the two roots unite to form the spinal nerve, the nerve transmits both sensory and motor information (i.e. it contains mixed fibers).
